May Meeting We were treated to a trunk show of quilts from one of our very own members, Denny Webster. Some of you may remember seeing a quilt or two of hers in the past during show and tell. Well, she has a whole series of quilts that she brought to share with us. Also members doing a job in the guild shared information about their job/jobs. The Nominating Committee will soon be filling positions for next year. We would like to encourage anyone interested to take a chance and try on something for size. Many jobs are easily done by more than one person, so consider sharing. This is a super way to get to know better the ladies who share your passion for quilts. The job descriptions are in the Bylaws (Link on the About Us page.)
April Meeting
March Meeting The March meeting was a fabulous celebration of our guild history. Lynne Fraas, Phyllis Coppolino, Sharon Jeffries, and Eileen Reid hosted a lovely event. We took a walk down memory lane with the entire list of past guild presidents present, played games, won prizes, showed the best of our past challenges, and guild sponsored classes. There were sweet treats for everyone and we had the opportunity to mingle with new people by selecting a rose and sitting at an assigned table. Mary and I thank each of you for organizing the special night and making it so memorable. Gretchen Caola
February Meeting Our February speaker was Marje Myers from That Thread Shop. The lecture was entitled "A Thread Tale." In this 45-minute lecture, she described the differences between threads that are available on the market today. Threads included in the lecture were cotton, polyester, rayon, silk and many decorative types of threads. It covered suggestions for applications using these threads as well as tips on how to successfully use decorative threads. The lecture included an overview of sewing machine needles and uses. It also included a fantastic trunk show.
January Meeting We enjoyed a fabulous January meeting with Jan Girod from the shop Fiber on a Whim. The meeting was full of interesting projects that she created with unusual items. She then taught a class on Friday that I had the pleasure of attending. It was completely out of my realm of traditional quilts and into the realm of art quilting. The class was well attended and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I am sure we will be seeing many cool quilts soon. Gretchen Caola
December 2007 Meeting We enjoyed a great holiday dinner celebration. Thank you to all of our members for preparing such great food. Our Show and Tell was spectacular. Our silent auction was a huge success. A special thank you to over 22 members who participated by spending their time making something special. Thank you to those who donated by purchasing the silent auction items. A big thank you to Judy Mahfood for organizing the silent auction. Our fundraiser quilt was won by Kenny Cosby, Cleme Cosby’s son.
November 2007 Meeting In addition to our scheduled “Challenge Quilts” exhibit and voting, we had a special treat. Dr. Christopher Andreone, a local Chiropractor, came to share his expertise on how we can perform our crafts and limit injuries as we do them.
There were twelve Challenge Quilts displaying a myriad of techniques to enjoy. The winners and photos of all twelve entries are posted under Challenge Quilt.
October 2007 Meeting The October program was our large Show and Tell. As a fundraiser and a fun-raiser the guild also held a Fabric Wrapped Gift Raffle. Members brought gifts wrapped in a piece of fabric to the meeting. The items were set on a table and everyone had an opportunity to look over the wrapped packages. The members were then able to buy tickets for the items they would like to win. The tickets were put in a container and pulled out until all of the items had been won. Challenge quilts were also collected and the members voted on the nominees for the Various Committee chairs and officers for 2008.
September 2007 Meeting Judy Simmons was our meeting speaker on Thursday night, September 27th and taught classes on September 28th & 29th. Judy's lecture for our meeting was on "Endless Inspiration." It began with a slide presentation depicting many, many sources of inspiration and quilts that were made from each source. Following the slide show she shared some of her own beautiful quilts. It was a wonderful and a truly "inspirational" evening.
On Friday, September 28th, Judy taught a full day workshop on "From Nature to Fabric". Saturday's half day workshop was on "Wonderful Textures." Judy is an Internationally known Teacher, a Designer of Art Quilts and Wearable's, and an Author of several books. She has won awards from the American Quilter’s Society, the National Quilting Association, and the American International Quilt Association; including seven awards from the AQS Fashion Show and the award for Excellence in Surface Design. Her work has also been published in many magazines. It was our pleasure
Our August 2007 Meeting Ladies, our program for this month is QUILTO. I know that lots of you are familiar with our QUILTO night but, for those who aren't, here is how it works. QUILTO is BINGO for quilters, all of the cards are full of quilt related items instead of numbers. The games are won by covering up 5 in a row, the four corners or for the final game all of the squares on your card. The center space is free just like in BINGO, and you may play as many cards as you like. Here is how you get your cards: you get one card for coming in the door! Then for each fat quarter (of any quilt fabric) you bring you may pick an additional card. The guild has some buttons for markers but, we do not have nearly enough to go around so please bring your own if you have them. You can use buttons, small safety pins, Hershey's Kisses, or anything that you would like. We ask you not to use markers as the cards are used over again and marks won't come off. All of the fat quarters that are used to pay for additional cards are put in the grand prize basket for the winner of the final game. The grand prize is truly grand!! I would like to remind ladies that we will need tables set up to play QUILTO and I will need help to do this. If you are able to come at 6:30p I will be there and will be very grateful to have extra hands to arrange the room. You may bring a guest and they may play the game, there will be a $5 charge for each guest. Ladies, I look forward to an exciting, fun night of QUILTO. Judy Mahfood
Our July 2007 Meeting For our July program we welcomed our speaker, Taffy McLaughlin, from Intown Quilters located in Decatur, Georgia. Taffy is a local and nationally known Quilt Instructor. Taffy introduced us to the wonder and versatility of 10½” Batik Squares. Taffy brought an assortment of colorful quilts to highlight her techniques. We were also able to purchase kits and patterns to try what we learned on our own.
Our June 2007 Meeting The speaker at our June meeting was Kris Townsend, owner of Heritage Quilts and Fabrics on the square in Newnan, Georgia. Kris is a fabric historian and quilting instructor. Kris took us back in time with her lecture on Civil War era quilting at our meeting.
Our May
2007 Meeting We had Mary Sue Suit visit our guild in May. She is a self-taught quilting instructor, author of 4 books (All the Blocks are Geese, A New Twist on Triangles, A New Turn on Drunkard’s Path and Crazy Eights) and designer of Mary Sue’s Triangle Ruler. While experiencing her quilt journey she has devised tools and shortcuts to simplify the process, which she shared with us. Mary Sue brought her very own originality and her ability to Wow the audience in her showing of quilts with her Twist on Triangles, Drunkards Path and Crazy Eight quilts and patterns. We had 11 participants in each of her classes on Friday and Saturday. Her classes were very inspiring and enjoyable. Everyone left with several techniques/designs that we are sure will be showing up in our future quilt projects.
Our April 2007 Meeting Our April speaker was Edie Wilbur. Edie is an award winning quilter and instructor. Her quilting journey started when she went to a quilt show and was astounded at the beauty and price of the quilts she saw. Already an experienced seamstress, she had sewing skills but, over the years she has improved on them and developed techniques for pieced and appliqué quilts that have won her national acclaim. She has won 2002 Best of Show Bed Quilt at the Georgia National Fair and numerous Blue Ribbons for quilts and other projects. She has taught classes at Local and National Quilt Shops and Retreats. Her lecture was entitled, “Versatility of the 9 Patch”.
Our
March 2007 Meeting Our March Speaker was Bethany Reynolds. In addition to an inspiring lecture/trunk show she taught two fabulous workshops.
