President’s Message -
May, 2008
By
Gretchen Caola

I have heard great things about our May meeting featuring our own Denny Webster. She brought a selection of quilts that were interesting and insightful. I wish I had been able to see the show.

During the month of June we will be hosting Regina Carter. She is a local longarm quilter and will be bringing a trunk show to share with us. We are so lucky to have such wonderful talent locally.

I would like to thank all of you that volunteered at the Art Show in Fayetteville and at Belk’s in Newnan. We have been very successful raising funds for the raffle quilt. Please look for Julie’s report in the newsletter.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the June meeting.

Program for June

Our next meeting will be on Thursday,  June 26th Longarm quilter, Regina Carter will present a trunk show.

Community Service 2008

This year we’ll be supporting 2 types of groups: Quilts of Valor and Battered Women’s Shelters.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation was started by Catherine Roberts, in 2003, when her son was deployed to Iraq.  She appealed to quilt makers to volunteer fabric & talents to make quilts to comfort wounded US soldiers and the families who have lost loved ones in the Iraq war.  There are several websites if you would like to read more about the effort, see quilts and patterns; here’s one: www.govf-um.org.  Desired quilt sizes are a minimum of 50” x 60” and a maximum of 72” x 96” with the ideal size 54” x 67.”  This group encourages your best work, new materials and patriotic colors to honor those who have risked their life for our country and way of life. The group requests quilts be washed once completed and donated in a presentation bag.  Instructions for this will be provided at a future meeting.

There are three battered women’s shelters in Fayette and Coweta counties that we will support this year.  These shelters will take any size or pattern quilt suitable for boys or girls, ages infant through teen, and of course women of all ages.  These shelters will appreciate all your scrap and completed UFO quilts in any color of the rainbow.

We would like to encourage you to complete one quilt for community service this year.  To help you we are planning two workdays to show new techniques and enlist your support for these groups.

Classes 2008

I was asked for the sign up sheets for the fall classes at the last meeting.  Therefore, for everyone’s convenience, I will have sign up sheets at the next meeting for the classes for the rest of the year.  If you already know, you will want to take a class in the fall you can sign up at the next meeting. See you all in March.

Barron's Ball Quilt

This year it was decided that the quilt would be a non-theme quilt.  It was concluded that most people would like a traditional quilt that they can relate to instead of one with the Western theme.  Sara Rowlinson and I met and decided to make the quilt from Intown Quilters called "All Squared Up".  I made this quilt for myself last year and it is very beautiful.

-Matty Porter

If you have any batiks leftover from the raffle quilt, Mattie Porter and Sara Rowlinson are looking for donations of 11-inch squares of batik for the Baron’s Ball quilt.

Show and Tell

Something NEW:  We would like to have folks display their Show and Tell quilts BEFORE the meetings, so everyone can have a chance to admire them.  If you can arrive about 6:30, we will have a section of our meeting room set up to spread out the quilts.  If you have several quilts to show, we are asking that you only display your favorite...this will give everyone a chance to show off their favorite quilt in advance of the Show and Tell section of our meeting.  We WANT your feedback on how this is working, so please feel free to send an email to either Mary Martorell or Lynn Fraas and let them know!

Fund Raising Quilt 2008 update

Our fundraising raffle quilt is now hanging at Quilt & Fixin's, in Jonesboro.  If you have not had a chance to see it, please do so. Thank you Jeanne, for allowing us to display the quilt.   It is a beautiful quilt and hopefully, will give you the incentive to buy and sell more raffle tickets.

Ladies, please note:  If you attend a show and help sell, any raffle tickets please put your name on the line:  sold by_____________.  You are using your personal time to help out, show the quilt and sell tickets.  Therefore, you will receive credit for the ticketss sold.  So........ladies, here is your opportunity to enjoy a show, help out, and sell raffle tickets and get credit for it.  I count and keep record of every ticket stub returned to me. We might be giving you the $25.00 gift certificate for the most tickets sold at the end of the year. Now is the time to sign up.  (The raffle tickets sold at the shows are at the tables. You do not pick them up from me. You pick up from me only the raffle tickets you will sell to your friends, neighbors and family.)  Pick them up from me, sell them and then turn in the money.  Come see me and let's make this a very good year in stewardship.  Let's keep the costs of the the community projects and classes down.

Thank you.
