Classes 2008

I was asked for the sign up sheets for the fall classes at the last meeting.  Therefore, for everyone’s convenience, I will have sign up sheets at the next meeting for the classes for the rest of the year.  If you already know, you will want to take a class in the fall you can sign up at the next meeting. See you all in March.

April 2008
Priscilla Evans Hair

In April, we had Pricilla Hair.  Her class was on the nine patch, as she described it, as old as she is the nine-patch block goes from traditional to contemporary with many stops along the way.  Choose the flavor you like-baby quilt, contemporary wall hanging, bed quilt-it’s your call.  It is much more interesting to quilt if you sing "What can you Do with a Klondike Bar" while choosing your fabrics."  Thirteen members attended this fun and inspirational class.

March 2008
Postcards with Schley

As part of the Guild's 10th Birthday celebration Schley, the guild founder and first president presented a workshop on making fabric postcards.

February 2008
Marje Myers

Marje Myers from That Thread Shop taught a workshop all about techniques for using decorative threads in your machine quilting.  This was a great class for anyone who machine quilts.

We had a wonderful class in February.  All those that attended had a great time and learned so much.  One of the attendees told me she thought it was the best class she has taken as part of the guild. -Judy

January 2008
Fiber on a Whim

We enjoyed a fabulous January meeting with Jan Girod from the shop Fiber on a Whim.  The meeting was full of interesting projects that she created with unusual items.  She then taught a class on Friday that I had the pleasure of attending.  It was completely out of my realm of traditional quilts and into the realm of art quilting.  The class was well attended and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.  I am sure we will be seeing many cool quilts soon.

September 2007
Judy Simmons

Judy Simmons, nationally known Quilter and Fiber Artist, was our meeting speaker on Thursday night, September 27th.  She taught classes on September 28th & 29th

Workshops:

  • Friday, September 28, “From Nature to Paper to Fabric” (full day).

  • Saturday, September 29, “Wonderful Textures” (half day).

These were the final classes for 2007.

May 2007
Mary Sue Suit

We had Mary Sue Suit visit our guild in May.  She is a self-taught quilting instructor, author of 4 books (All the Blocks are Geese,  A New Twist on Triangles, A New Turn on Drunkard’s Path and Crazy Eights) and designer of Mary Sue’s Triangle Ruler.  Mary Sue has devised tools and shortcuts to simplify the process.

Mary Sue taught workshops on Friday and Saturday at the church.  Eleven people attended Mary Sue's Friday Workshop, “A New Twist on Triangles” and twelve people attended her Saturday Workshop, “Crazy Eights”.  Her classes were very inspiring and enjoyable.   Everyone left with several techniques/designs that we are sure will be showing up in our future quilt projects.

More about Classes

Having said all of the above, we at Southern Crescent pride ourselves on our attention to providing excellent learning opportunities for our members, and this costs money.  We are obligated to pay these wonderful instructors whether the classes are filled or not.  So do take a class so that we will be able to continue doing this.  Classes are not only for beginning quilters.  You can teach an old dog a new trick, or two.

Another thing I want to run by you is the policy for classes, so there won’t be any confusion.

  • It is very helpful if you will pay for the class when you register.
  • Unless indicated otherwise, your check should be made out to QGSC.  Of course, cash is accepted.
  • Upon payment, you will be furnished a supply list.
  • If you have to cancel for any reason, you will receive a refund up to one week before the class date.
