BLOCK OF THE MONTH
February
2008 - January 2009
This year we will be doing something new for our
Block of the Month. In addition to making a block for the drawing,
you may also want to make your own block to keep. We will each
select our own color palette and focus fabric. By the end of the
year you will have twelve blocks that go together---AND in colors you
like. Also included are setting options to complete your quilt.
(Because the design includes garden flora and fauna and because Jenny's
BOM quilt will be for her mother-in-law, Trudy, the pattern is called
"Trudy's Garden.") The finished quilt will be about 83 x 89
inches, depending on how wide you choose to make your borders.
If you want to make your own set of blocks, think
about your color selections. Jenny is using pink, rose, and green
to go with Trudy's newly remodeled bedroom. Other possible color
combinations include:
-
Bright blue, yellow, and green
-
Dark blue, burgundy, and deep green
-
Red, black, and dark green
-
Any two colors that go together, plus some
version of green for the leaves (get the idea?)
The simplest way to go about this process is to find
a beautiful focus fabric that you love, then pick coordinating
colors/fabrics. You'll also want to select a uniform background,
such as white-on-white, unbleached muslin, black, navy, bubblegum pink,
or whatever---as long as it contrasts well with your main colors.
You can begin this project without buying all the
fabric---just decide what colors you want to include. But for
those of you who insist on planning ahead, here is a rough estimate
of the yardage you will need for the completed quilt top (add more for
backing and binding).
-
Focus fabric (Jenny's is a large-scale
pink/green floral)--3 yards
-
Main color #1 (Jenny's are assorted pinks)--2
yards
-
Main color #2, including yardage for border
(Jenny's are assorted rose colors)--3 yards
-
Main color #3 (some version of green)--1½
yards
-
Background color (Jenny's is white-on-white)--1½
yards
If you make two blocks each month - one for your
quilt, one to share in the drawing -- remember to bring them to the
meeting.
